SAINT
BARTHÉLEMY
Saint-Barthélemy often springs a
few surprises on its visitors. Just
when you thought you had fully
explored all the major roads on the
island, you come across a hidden
junction that takes you to an
unexpected place. Corossol.
This charming little fishing village is easy to dismiss as merely picturesque, its traditions and
its way of life have been so perfectly preserved over the years. However, Corossol may surprise
you on many levels. Surrounded by hills, the village hugs the shoreline of a tiny bay. The vegetation
is dense and lush, making it one of the shadiest places on the island. A friendly neighborhood
where life is good, its timelessness is legendary, time seems simply to have passed it by.
In Corossol the sea front, a place for meeting and gossip, has always been the nerve center of
the village. Still today, villagers like to gather there to put the world to rights or for a celebration.
Like August 25, a memorable day for Corossol, as it is the feast day of St Louis, the patron saint
of the village. All the inhabitants gather close to “The Rock” just below the small chapel.
The festival offers a marvelous opportunity to experience the local culture and traditions. With its
contests and beach games the atmosphere is very goodnatured. Another feature of Corossol that
is well worth the detour is “Le Régal”, its only restaurant. A friendly little snack bar run by owner Miki
who will do everything he can to make sure you enjoy your meal. The food has a Créole flavor and
includes of course local delicacies prepared from the bounty of the sea. Needless to say, Corossol is an
essential place to see if you would like to discover or rediscover the charm of a bygone era on St Barth.
