Philipsburg is the capital of the Dutch side but,

first and foremost, it is the undisputed shopping

capital of the Caribbean region. No other tourist

destination in the islands offers anything to

compare with it.

The town has grown up over the years along the

shore of Great Bay and is centered on two long

and parallel streets, Front Street and Back Street.

If all the stores and boutiques on these two streets

were lined up side by side they would offer an

uninterrupted chain of windows more than 6

kilometers long! American tour operators have

long been aware of this fact and so the most

luxurious cruise ships go out of their way to stop

in Philipsburg and give their passengers this

incomparable shopping opportunity. Believe

me, they are never disappointed as all their

purchases are entirely duty-free.
